For intensity of colour there are few birds in the UK that can out-dazzle the kingfisher. I'm looking forward to my summer break on the farm in Norfolk where I hope I can spend more time observing these fabulous birds. I think it must have been the anticipation that inspired me to paint yet another kingfisher. I wanted to show the electric blue stripe on the birds back to full advantage and while I was thinking about this I had the idea of using an electric fence pole and insulator as a perch. Many ponds are fenced this way to keep cattle or horses out and I've seen kingfishers taking advantage of them for fishing. I went on an insulator reference hunt and found an old, broken, yellow one. I changed the colour to a blue more in keeping with the hues of the painting and the concept and 'Electric blue' is the result.
