Each year, in early spring, wheatears pass through Elmley on their way north to breed. The males are magnificent in their breeding plumage and I've wanted to capture the elegant simplicity for a while now. Wheatears rarely perch above about head height, preferring to keep low to the ground so I needed a perch which would reflect that trait. I was struck by the sculptural and textural qualities of the rocks depicted in this painting and thought they would make an almost perfect foil to the smoothness of the wheatear's wonderful spring finery.
